In my own little wine world, I discovered Barbera last summer while tasting with a few girlfriends. Right out of the barrel, the taste was spicy and bold. So much that one person exclaimed “it smells like a hot black man”!
Hard to find a lot of details online about this particular glass…so I’ll just share a bit about the popularity of Barbera:
Barbera is one of the classic Grapes of Italy’s Piedmont region, though it is popular throughout much of Northwest Italy and has gained a following in California. Searing acidity has been a trait of Barbera though modern viticultural techniques and warmer regions have tamed the acidity, resulting in medium-bodied wines with bright, red fruit tones that feature hints of violets, earth and plum with just a whisper of tannin.
